6th MS INFANTRY, COMPANY I

Sometimes referred to as The Bloody Sixth, the 6th Mississippi Infantry fought gallantly and most notably at Shiloh, as well as other major campaigns during the war between the states.  Company I, the Rankin Greys, led by Dr. John J. Thornton, was formed in February 1861 as a reorganization of the original Rankin Guards. They entered state service in May of 1861.  The 6th surrendered on April 26, 1865.
